The best food in the world usually comes with an amazing story. This is certainly true of the food and the story of Helen Velesiotis, spoken in her own words in her lasting Greek accent.
I grew up in Greece. My grandfather was a refugee and it was a difficult time. As a a child my mother was terrorized by Nazi soldiers in occupied Greece simply because she happened to put on the boots of an officer. As time passed, I became very close to my grandmother who taught me much of the essence of Greek cooking. I remember going to the fields to harvest herbs, grapes, berries and other fruits that we would use to make delightful preserves and jellies. We would sell these delicacies in order to go to the market once a month to buy food. That was the beginning of my lifelong romance with tantalizing food. My mother taught me to make pitas stuffed with cheese, meats, or vegetables, as well as sauces and desserts.
